If You Have Ghosts

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

The confrontation at Brett Woodard's house becomes a deadly battle. Explosives and gunfire kill the men who came after him, while Roland is wounded in the leg. Wayne reaches Woodard inside and tries to persuade him to surrender. Woodard refuses to face arrest and turns his weapon toward Wayne, who shoots him. Afterward, Amelia comforts Wayne, and their relationship becomes intimate on the same night that the investigation has left him responsible for another veteran's death.

The 1990 inquiry reveals how Woodard became the official answer to the Purcell case. Evidence supposedly recovered at his house does not match the scene as Wayne remembers it, and the detectives suspect Will's bag was planted. Freddy Burns recalls Will looking for his sister and asking where other people had gone. Another witness describes Julie calling herself Mary July and speaking about pink rooms and a secret princess. Tom's public appeal is answered by a recorded caller who rejects him as her father and demands to know what happened to her brother.

In 2015, Elisa brings up the disappearance of former officer Harris James. Reading Amelia's account of her meeting with Lucy, Wayne notices a phrase that links Lucy to the old letter. He seeks Roland at his isolated home and apologises for a quarrel he cannot fully remember. Roland is hurt by their long separation, but agrees to help him investigate again. The reunion gives Wayne someone to work beside as his memory becomes less dependable.
