Sookie and Bill travel to Dallas after Eric Northman recruits them to find his maker, Godric, whose disappearance has drawn the Fellowship of the Sun into a conflict with the local vampires. Jason, meanwhile, joins the church’s anti-vampire movement and becomes close to its leaders, Steve and Sarah Newlin. Sookie’s search takes her inside the Fellowship, where she and Jason are caught up in a violent standoff. Godric is found to have gone willingly, rejects revenge, and chooses to meet the sun. Eric begs him to stay, but leaves at Godric’s command; Sookie remains with him as the sun rises.
Back in Bon Temps, Maryann Forrester’s influence spreads from Tara to the townspeople. She is a maenad seeking a sacrificial offering for her god, and her rituals leave residents with missing memories and violent impulses. Sam recognizes her from his past and tries to escape her reach, while his connection with fellow shapeshifter Daphne draws him back into danger. Tara and Eggs grow closer under Maryann’s control. Hoyt and Jessica begin a relationship, and Lafayette, after being held and abused at Fangtasia, returns to Merlotte’s, traumatized by his captivity.
Maryann’s followers prepare a bloody wedding with Sookie as maid of honor and Sam as the intended sacrifice. After Maryann has Eggs stab him, Sam survives with Bill’s help and turns into the bull figure she worships; he kills her by goring and then removing her heart. Sookie helps Eggs recover memories of what he did under the spell, and Jason shoots him when Eggs confronts Andy. The town returns to itself, but a separate crisis follows: Bill proposes to Sookie at dinner, and someone kidnaps him while she is away from the table.
