Ciri pushes beyond Geralt's basic exercises when Lambert and Coën show her the witchers' obstacle course. Repeated falls leave her bruised, but she keeps returning until she can cross most of it. Her final landing still fails. Geralt sees her determination without treating injury as proof that she is ready for everything. The witchers are also mourning Eskel, and Vesemir's attempt to understand the infection gives way to the need to lay his friend's remains to rest.
Ciri finally tells Geralt about the visions she has been hiding and the force pulling her toward the woods. He accompanies her to investigate. They find the leshy Eskel fought, but a different creature attacks it before turning toward them. Ciri runs while Geralt protects her. The encounter leaves the danger attached to her abilities unresolved: bringing her inside the witchers' home has not kept strange monsters from finding her, and physical training alone cannot explain why they are drawn to her.
Yennefer returns to Aretuza and reunites with Tissaia, but Stregobor treats her survival and release as evidence of treachery. She is ordered to execute Cahir publicly to demonstrate loyalty to the Brotherhood. Still without magic, she refuses that bargain. At the ceremony she cuts his bonds instead of taking his head, topples burning braziers to obstruct pursuit and rides away with him.
