Season synopsis

After the Saviors’ defeat, Rick tries to bind Alexandria, Hilltop, the Kingdom and Oceanside into a shared future, but rebuilding the bridge deepens old resentments. When walkers and sabotage threaten the work, Rick is thrown from his horse and impaled. He draws the herd toward the bridge and blows it apart to protect the communities. His friends believe he died; Anne finds him alive and has him taken away by helicopter. The story jumps six years: Michonne, guarded after a violent encounter with strangers, raises Judith and young RJ in Alexandria, while Daryl lives apart and Maggie is away with Georgie’s group.
Magna’s group reaches the communities just as the Whisperers begin testing their borders. They wear walker skins to move among the dead, and their leader Alpha demands her captured daughter Lydia back. After a hostage exchange returns Lydia to her mother, Daryl and Connie rescue her and Henry; Henry’s attachment to her helps turn the conflict into war. At the Kingdom’s fair, Alpha marks her territory with the severed heads of Tara, Enid, Henry and others, leaving Siddiq alive to describe the slaughter. The deaths shatter a rare gathering of the communities’ leaders.
The finale brings winter. With the Kingdom’s buildings failing, residents travel toward Hilltop, but a blizzard drives them through Whisperer territory and across a frozen river. Carol stops Lydia from letting herself be bitten, then separates from Ezekiel and goes to Alexandria. Negan risks himself in the storm to save Judith and Dog, and Michonne thanks him. After Ezekiel leaves the radio, an unknown woman calls out unheard, asking whether anyone is there.
