Season synopsis

The communities live beside the Whisperers under Alpha’s border rules, but repeated walker attacks and a deadly cave trap make the truce untenable. Carol’s pursuit of Alpha helps strand several survivors underground; a collapse leaves Connie and Magna missing; Magna later escapes, and Virgil finds Connie alive after the Whisperer War. In Alexandria, Siddiq treats a spreading illness while struggling with trauma, unaware Dante is sabotaging the community. Siddiq recognizes Dante as a Whisperer, and Dante kills him; Gabriel then kills Dante in his cell.
Alpha burns Hilltop, and Beta kills Mary, the former Whisperer Gamma. Negan, secretly released by Carol to kill Alpha, earns her trust and then decapitates her, bringing her head to Carol. Beta takes command and drives his herd toward survivors sheltering in a hospital. Daryl stabs Beta in both eyes, and walkers kill him; Lydia and Carol lead the herd over a cliff. Maggie returns in time to save Gabriel, and the Whisperers’ army is destroyed. At a nearby rail yard, Eugene’s group arrives to meet radio contact Stephanie and finds itself surrounded by armored soldiers.
Earlier, Michonne finds evidence that Rick may be alive on Virgil’s island and leaves to search for him. Six additional episodes follow the survivors through isolation and difficult returns. Maggie returns with her son Hershel, reigniting tension with Negan, while grief and blame strain Daryl and Carol’s friendship. In “Here’s Negan,” he recalls how Lucille’s cancer and the collapse of the old world shaped him. In the present, Negan rejects Carol’s attempt to send him away and returns to Alexandria, where Maggie must face him again.
