Season 3

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

After months on the road, Rick’s group finds an abandoned prison and clears its cell blocks, but Hershel is bitten and Rick amputates his lower leg to keep the infection from spreading. The survivors hold the prison alongside a few former inmates. Andrea, separated from the group at the farm, reaches Woodbury with Michonne and is drawn into the Governor’s manufactured sense of safety. During a walker breach at the prison, Lori dies in childbirth; Carl shoots her body to prevent her reanimation, and Rick withdraws into grief and begins seeing visions of her. The Governor’s conflict with the prison escalates over the season, leading to a failed assault and the collapse of his hold on Woodbury.

The Governor’s army retreats from the prison after Rick’s group ambushes them, but the Governor kills the soldiers who flee with him. Andrea, captured at Woodbury, is left chained in a room with the mortally wounded Milton, whom the Governor has stabbed after Milton tries to turn on him. Milton reanimates and bites Andrea; she is found too late and chooses to shoot herself before she can turn. Earlier, Merle frees Michonne and attacks the Governor’s men, but the Governor kills Merle and leaves him to reanimate. Daryl finds his brother’s walker and puts him down. At the end of the season, Rick welcomes the surviving Woodbury residents into the prison, including Karen, who escaped the massacre; the Governor leaves with Martinez.
