As It Should Be

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Disease, hunger and graves surround the English army outside Boulogne, but the siege finally reaches the point where the mine can be fired. Girolamo and two other men remain underground to light the fuses while the rest withdraw. Harry runs to escape as the charge explodes and towers and walls begin to collapse above him. The breach gives Henry the victory he has demanded, although the success immediately costs more lives. Girolamo dies trying to save another man in the tunnel, and Richard Leland is shot during the celebration. Harry survives to explain that the engineer was too far back to be rescued.

News of the capture reaches Catherine and the royal children, who celebrate Henry as a conqueror. The return to England brings less comfort than the triumph promises. Brandon's attachment to Brigitte gives him a new private life, while Mary faces Chapuys's departure and the loss of the adviser who has long stood beside her. He gives her a ring and a final embrace. Henry then hears that the emperor's agreement has left him exposed and that French forces threaten Boulogne again. He can barely respond through the pain and fever he has hidden since returning. Left alone among the trophies and plans of his campaign, he collapses, with the symbols of victory scattered around his unconscious body.
