The Act of Succession

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Elizabeth's christening establishes the new princess's place, while Henry and Cromwell prepare to demand acceptance of Anne's marriage and children. The Act of Succession turns disagreement into a question of loyalty to the crown. Brandon is sounded out about supporting the measure and decides to give Henry his vote. More, living away from court, recognises the danger in the required oath and refuses to explain away the religious problem for himself. Fisher is already imprisoned and openly disputes the legality of the marriage and Henry's authority over the church. The pope's decision to make him a cardinal gives Henry another challenge rather than a reason to release him.

Mary is sent to Elizabeth's household and placed in a small room suited to a servant. Her father has stripped away her position while making her younger sister the centre of the new succession. Anne visits the household, but Mary's refusal to recognise her as queen prevents the meeting from becoming a reconciliation. Henry later comes to see Elizabeth and leaves without asking for Mary. Only when he notices her watching from above does he acknowledge her with a formal bow, which she returns. At court, Anne also tries to control the king's interest in Eleanor Luke by having the woman removed. Her new title gives her authority over servants, while Henry continues to test the limits of that authority.
