Anne waits in the Tower as the arrangements for her execution move forward around her. The swordsman from Calais prepares the weapon that will end her life, and delays force her to endure repeated uncertainty about when she will die. Cranmer hears her confession and tells her that the marriage has been annulled. For a moment she wonders whether that decision might mean removal to a convent, but Kingston's response makes clear that the sentence still stands. At Wolf Hall, Henry treats the annulment as permission to propose to Jane. Her father receives the announcement at dinner while Anne remains alive and awaiting the scaffold.
The consequences also reach Elizabeth, whose household is being packed up now that she has lost the position her mother's marriage gave her. Jane asks Henry about restoring Mary, only to discover how little room there is for directing his decisions. Anne finally walks out to face the crowd, thanks her attendants and speaks respectfully of the king before kneeling. Cranmer kneels too, prompting the watching courtiers to follow. The executioner distracts her attention and kills her with his sword. Henry is elsewhere, occupied with his own appetite and the life he expects to begin with Jane. The season closes after Anne's death, with the royal marriage ended through both law and violence.
