Anne holds an increasingly queenly place beside Henry, with attendants, fine furnishings and the confidence to receive visitors. Thomas Wyatt introduces her to the musician Mark Smeaton, whose playing earns him a place in her circle. Outside those rooms, opposition to the king's chosen relationship is becoming dangerous. A cook adds poison to the meal prepared for Bishop Fisher's guests, with Thomas More among those expected at the table. Fisher takes only a little, and More avoids the dish. The attempted killing makes the fight over Henry's marriage something that can reach directly into a private household and put its guests at risk.
Henry leaves Catherine behind and settles into time alone with Anne, enjoying the apparent freedom of their relationship. Catherine refuses to behave as though she has ceased to be his wife. Her messenger interrupts the couple to ask after Henry and point out that he left without saying goodbye. Henry responds by beating the man, forcing Anne to watch how quickly pleasure can turn into rage. He later apologises, and she carefully helps him restore the evening's calm. Elsewhere, Chapuys meets a hooded servant and asks whether he will kill Anne. The man agrees, ending the episode with a concealed threat to the woman Henry is trying to establish beside him.
