Truth and Justice

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Cardinal Campeggio arrives to consider Henry's marriage, but Wolsey's urgency meets a visitor determined to move slowly. A portrait sitting places Henry and Catherine together while exposing how uncomfortable that shared position has become. Catherine refuses to step aside quietly, and Anne's growing public access to Henry makes the dispute harder to contain. At a court entertainment, Henry and Anne dance while others watch from the room and the gallery. Margaret pleads with her brother about the relationship, only to be told to attend to her own marriage. Wolsey cannot satisfy Henry with the limited concessions he has obtained from the papal visitor.

Catherine prepares to defend herself while her appointed advisers try to frighten her with suggestions that she and Mary could be blamed for plots against the king. She refuses to let those warnings force her into submission. At the hearing, Henry explains why he doubts the legality of the marriage, while Fisher disputes the claim that the bishops have all supported him. Catherine then kneels before Henry and appeals directly to their years together, her loyalty and her claim to have entered the marriage a virgin. Having made her case, she leaves the court rather than accept its authority over her. The crowd cheers her departure, and Wolsey is left facing a furious king and waiting opponents.
