Motivation

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Dawn walks in on Tim and Rachel kissing, confirming that their flirtation has become a relationship. Gareth is jealous too and handles the news with his usual crude remarks. When computer technician Simon visits to install firewalls, Gareth is impressed by his claims about racing and Bruce Lee. Tim challenges Simon's story, but Simon retaliates with a remark about Dawn that makes the exchange much less comfortable for him.

Brent prepares for his first paid motivational appearance and offers Dawn a hundred pounds to help him. His enthusiasm for this new role sits badly beside his responsibilities at Wernham Hogg. Neil confronts him because one of the transferred employees has not been paid, giving Brent another practical problem that cannot be solved by presenting himself as a popular boss. Brent nevertheless heads to the seminar ready to demonstrate his approach to leadership.

The speech becomes a strained performance of borrowed philosophy, dramatic gestures and unsuitable jokes. Brent challenges anyone without ambition to leave, then undermines his message with remarks about disability. His attempt to make the audience laugh by laughing himself receives no response. He finishes by singing and moving to Tina Turner's The Best, returning to object when Jude stops the music. Afterwards, he tries to persuade the consultants to go for a drink while leaving Dawn to deal with his belongings. Dawn compares her life with a successful former schoolmate and admits it has not turned out as she expected.
