Tommy prepares Joel’s body for burial while Ellie wakes in the hospital in panic. Months later, after she is cleared to leave, Dina admits that she recognized the WLF patch on Abby’s group and connects it to a Seattle militia Eugene once described. She tells Ellie where the group is based. Ellie wants to leave immediately, but Tommy insists they bring the decision to Jackson’s council before pursuing Abby.
At the town meeting, Ellie argues that Jackson should send a posse to Seattle, and Tommy supports her. The council rejects the plan by an eight-to-three vote. Dina joins Ellie anyway, packing to leave with her after Ellie prepares to go alone. Seth, who had argued in favour of the mission, helps them slip out of Jackson. Before departing, Ellie visits Joel’s grave and leaves coffee beans there.
On the road west, Ellie and Dina come across dead members of the Seraphites, a religious group they know little about. Among the dead is a young girl, and the sight makes Dina vomit. As they approach the city, a large WLF convoy moves through the streets. Ellie and Dina have reached their destination, but they still underestimate the militia’s strength and the conflict surrounding it.
