Season synopsis

A year after Will Byers returns from the Upside Down, he sees its storm-dark world and a shadow creature. Hawkins Lab doctor Sam Owens calls the visions trauma, but Will feels tunnels spreading beneath Hawkins and draws their paths for his family. The Mind Flayer also uses Will as a spy, learning what the lab team is doing and luring them into danger. Dustin’s pet Dart grows into a Demodog. Hopper secretly keeps Eleven in a cabin; she leaves to find her mother and meet Kali, another test subject, then chooses her Hawkins friends over Kali’s revenge.
The Demodogs overrun Hawkins Lab. Bob Newby restores power so the trapped group can escape, but the creatures kill him at the exit. Eleven then returns to Hawkins and reunites with Mike. Her friends learn that the gate must close to sever the Mind Flayer’s link to its army, and Will must be freed first. Joyce, Jonathan and Nancy take him to Hopper’s cabin and use heat to drive the creature out. Meanwhile, Steve fights Billy at the Byers house, and Max sedates him. The kids burn the tunnel hub to draw Demodogs away, clearing Eleven a path to close the gate.
Earlier, Nancy and Jonathan had secretly recorded Dr. Owens confirming Barb Holland’s death is being covered up, then taken the tape to investigative journalist Murray Bauman. He reshapes it into a chemical-poisoning story that gives Barb’s parents closure and forces some of those responsible to resign. Owens gives Hopper papers naming Eleven as Jane Hopper, his daughter. At the Snow Ball, Mike and Eleven dance and kiss, while Lucas and Max share a kiss. The immediate threat is over, but the Mind Flayer remains alive in the Upside Down, looming over Hawkins Middle School in the closing shot.
