After Jadzia’s death, the Dax symbiont survives in a new host, Ezri, who joins Sisko on his search for the Orb of the Emissary. Opening it on Tyree expels the Pah-wraiths and restores the wormhole. Sisko learns that a Prophet possessed his mother to ensure his birth. He returns to Deep Space Nine with Ezri while the Dominion War continues.
Cardassia’s alliance with the Dominion breaks down as Damar leads a rebellion, aided by Kira and Garak. Odo is dying from the disease afflicting the Changelings, and Bashir lures Section 31 operative Sloan to the station by claiming to have a cure. When Sloan attempts suicide to protect his secrets, Bashir and O’Brien enter his mind and recover the formula before it is lost. Bashir cures Odo, making it possible for him to offer the same treatment to the Founders.
In the final battle, Cardassian ships change sides and the Dominion orders mass killings in retaliation. Damar dies during the assault on its headquarters. Odo links with the female Founder, cures her and secures her surrender, then returns to the Great Link to heal his people. On Bajor, Dukat and Kai Winn try to release the Pah-wraiths. Dukat kills Winn; Sisko drags him and their book into the Fire Caves’ chasm, sealing the spirits away. The Prophets take Sisko into the wormhole, and he promises Kasidy he will return without knowing when. Kira assumes command, Worf becomes an ambassador and O’Brien leaves to teach.
