Mark and Gemma meet at a Lumon blood drive while working as university professors. Their courtship leads to marriage, pregnancy and the loss of their baby through miscarriage. They seek fertility treatment at a Lumon clinic, but repeated attempts fail. After they decide to stop trying, Mark becomes absorbed in work. One night he declines to join Gemma for an outing; the police later tell him she has died in a car crash. The episode also shows Gemma alive on Lumon’s testing floor, moving between rooms whose names match completed Macrodata Refinement files.
Each room awakens a different innie who endures an unpleasant experience, including dentistry or turbulence. Dr. Mauer questions Gemma afterwards about any remaining memories or feelings. He tells her Mark has remarried and has a daughter. Refusing to believe him, Gemma strikes Mauer with a chair, takes his keycard and reaches an elevator. It switches her into Ms. Casey, allowing Milchick to send her back downstairs without resistance. Outside Lumon, Mark remains unconscious after his seizure. Reghabi tells Devon that Gemma is alive and explains why Mark chose reintegration. Devon considers using the birthing retreat to awaken his innie and seeks Cobel’s help despite Reghabi’s warning. Reghabi leaves, and Mark finally wakes with memories of Gemma.
