A flashback shows Helly recording her consent to severance before undergoing the procedure. Back at Lumon, she returns from the stairwell after trying to quit and learns that a day has passed without her memory of it. Mark explains the number-sorting work at Macrodata Refinement, but cannot say what the figures mean. Milchick throws Helly a welcome party, where the team takes a group photograph. Helly writes a resignation request for her outside self, but Lumon's code detectors stop her from carrying it out of the building. Mark accepts responsibility for the incident and is sent to the break room, where a recording later reveals him repeating an apology under pressure.
Outside Lumon, Mark goes on a date with Alexa and argues with anti-severance protesters. He eventually follows Petey's address to an abandoned greenhouse. Petey shows him a hand-drawn map of Lumon's severed floor and plays a recording of Mark's forced apology. Inside the office, Irving sees a dark liquid in a hallucination and receives a wellness session in which Ms. Casey reads facts about his outside life. He meets Burt, Optics and Design's leader, while looking at a painting. Helly finally refines her first data cluster, while Petey hides at Mark's home. The episode ends with Petey collapsing in the shower as his memories intrude.
