Caesar reaches Alexandria expecting to pursue Pompey and is instead presented with his severed head. The Egyptian court has mistaken the killing for a useful gift, but Caesar reacts with anger at the treatment of a Roman commander. He demands accountability and presses Egypt over its debts to Rome. The young Ptolemy rules with advisers who have excluded his sister Cleopatra, making the royal family's own struggle another part of Caesar's campaign. Caesar orders Vorenus and Pullo to find her and bring her to him, opening a route to an alliance that does not depend on Ptolemy's court.
The soldiers rescue Cleopatra, but she has plans for the journey as well as for the throne. Believing that conceiving a child would strengthen her position with Caesar, she asks Vorenus to sleep with her. He refuses, and Pullo takes his place. Cleopatra reaches Caesar and joins him in an alliance that turns them into partners against her brother's faction. Fighting around Alexandria follows as Caesar remains in Egypt rather than immediately returning home. In Rome, Brutus and Cicero wait to learn whether his position will collapse, while Antony keeps pressure on his opponents. Cleopatra eventually presents Caesarion as Caesar's son. Vorenus's knowing look towards Pullo leaves the television story's question of the child's parentage hanging over the celebration.
