After years with Caesar’s army in Gaul, centurion Lucius Vorenus and legionary Titus Pullo are drawn into the struggle over Rome. Vorenus tries to resume life with Niobe and their children, while Pullo returns to gambling. Niobe’s baby is secretly her son by another man, passed off as their daughter’s child. Caesar marches on Rome and Pompey withdraws south, pulling the soldiers into civil war.
Vorenus leaves the army to try business, but losses and gangster Erastes Fulmen draw him toward crime. Pullo tutors Octavian and helps expose Niobe’s secret; the family butcher shop gives Vorenus a brief foothold. Across Greece and Egypt, Caesar’s fortunes turn, Pompey is killed, and Pullo and Vorenus help Cleopatra reach Caesar. Atia and Servilia turn grudges into political weapons, and Servilia’s use of Octavia exposes Niobe’s secret.
Caesar takes a ten-year dictatorship; Vorenus becomes magistrate, and Pullo’s attempt to build a quiet life with Eirene collapses after he kills her fiancé in a jealous rage. Working for Erastes, Pullo assassinates Caesar’s opponent Aufidius Dento, then refuses to name his employer and faces execution. Vorenus intervenes in the arena and saves him. The crowd makes them heroes, and Caesar gives Vorenus a Senate seat. As conspirators close in on Caesar, Servilia tells Vorenus that Niobe’s baby was born from her affair. The disclosure ends in a fatal confrontation at home, and Vorenus is absent when Caesar is stabbed in the Senate.
