Episode 3

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Michael arrives in Polly's life after years with an adoptive family, and their reunion is awkward rather than instantly easy. Polly wants to protect him from the Shelbys' criminal business. Michael is more interested in the life and money surrounding his newly discovered relatives than in returning to the quiet village where he grew up. Tommy's expansion offers him an alternative that Polly fears.

The gang recruits Harold Hancox, who calls himself the Digbeth Kid and carries a wooden pistol inspired by cowboy films. He is used in the Shelby operation and ends up in prison, where Sabini's men murder him. His death brings the London conflict back to Birmingham and exposes what happens to someone with little protection once rival gangs decide to send the Shelbys a message.

At a horse sale, Tommy meets May Carleton, who breeds and trains racehorses and has useful connections in the racing world. She offers to train his horse, and he considers the arrangement. An attacker then tries to shoot Tommy, but Arthur intervenes and beats the man before the brothers pull him away. Michael witnesses the violence and is told to say nothing. When Polly asks how the outing went, he speaks admiringly of the family instead of revealing the attack.
