Tommy prepares to challenge Billy Kimber's racing operation, but information about the plan reaches Kimber first. The expected advantage becomes a threat to Small Heath when Kimber brings armed men to the neighbourhood. Campbell orders his officers away and allows the confrontation to develop. Tommy also learns that Grace has worked for the police, leaving him to face the fight after discovering her betrayal.
The Shelbys free Freddie Thorne from custody, and he returns with the machine gun that escaped Campbell's recovery operation. Ada steps between the gangs with her baby, demanding that the men think about their families before shooting. Her intervention interrupts the standoff, but Kimber fires and Danny Whizz-Bang is killed. Tommy shoots Kimber and sends the remaining men home, ending the immediate fight without a general battle in the street.
The Lee alliance helps secure racing pitches while Kimber's men are occupied in Birmingham. The Shelbys celebrate the growth of their legal betting business, and Danny is given a real burial. Grace asks Tommy to leave with her, but his letter weighs their love against his responsibilities to the family. He has yet to give her a decision when Campbell approaches her at the railway station. A gunshot ends the episode without showing the result of their encounter.
