A visit to the Lee family ends in a fight after insults against the Shelby brothers' ancestry. Tommy uses the quarrel to create a business opening: Billy Kimber also has trouble with the Lees, who steal from his bookmakers. The stolen government guns give Tommy a separate bargaining position with Inspector Campbell. He offers help recovering them in exchange for the police leaving the Shelby operation alone.
Polly discovers that Ada is pregnant and confronts her about Freddie Thorne. Tommy wants Freddie out of Birmingham, treating the relationship as a threat to the family and to his dealings with the authorities. Freddie returns after receiving a warning, proposes to Ada and refuses to leave the city. Ada accepts him, even though their decision puts them directly against her brother's wishes.
The horse Tommy bought from the Lees becomes dangerously ill, and he shoots it before seeking company at the Garrison. Grace sings for him and agrees to accompany him to Cheltenham, while keeping her connection with Campbell hidden. Kimber arrives to challenge the Shelbys over a fixed race. Tommy answers by offering protection against the Lees, and Kimber leaves willing to hear more. The brothers have gained a chance at legal racing pitches through a fight Tommy deliberately provoked.
