Orange Is the New Black

Season 6

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

After the riot, the inmates are transferred to Litchfield’s maximum-security prison. Federal investigators separate the women and press them to identify riot leaders, while those returned to the blocks must navigate a harsher regime. Red and her friends face isolation and new guard abuse; Suzanne and Frieda become cellmates in Florida, a quieter block for elderly and mentally ill prisoners. In C and D blocks, Carol and Barb Denning command opposing factions, turning the prison’s existing divisions into a proxy war. Flashbacks trace how the sisters’ rivalry grew over decades, with both sides maneuvering to control the prison’s drug trade.

Taystee’s trial becomes the season’s central reckoning with Poussey’s death and the riot. She is charged with killing Piscatella, although the officers’ cover-up and the unreliable testimony against her obscure what happened. Cindy testifies against Taystee to protect herself, and Caputo tries to expose the misconduct surrounding the case. The jury nevertheless finds Taystee guilty of second-degree murder and she is returned to prison with a life sentence. Meanwhile, Daya is caught in the prison’s drug trade, and her mother Aleida chooses to keep their outside operation running to support her younger children.

Piper’s sentence ends early, and Alex surprises her with a prison wedding before she leaves. Blanca expects to reunite with Diablo, but she and other immigrant parolees are instead taken into ICE custody. Inside, Piper’s kickball game aims to bring the blocks together, but Carol and Barb use its distraction to sneak toward Florida and kill Frieda. They turn on each other in a supply closet and both are found fatally wounded. Their deaths end the feud, while Piper’s release and Blanca’s detention set up very different paths beyond Litchfield.
