Season synopsis

One year after Lucas and Peyton leave Tree Hill, Nathan is established in the NBA while Haley runs Red Bedroom Records. His season is unsettled when Renee Richardson claims that she became pregnant after an encounter with him. Nathan denies it, but the accusation reaches the press and threatens his marriage, his career and the trust of Haley and Jamie. Clay, Nathan’s agent, and Mouth help him confront the story; Dan and his new wife, Rachel, become involved in the public fight. Dan eventually uses his television show to expose Renee’s deception, then ends the show and his marriage to Rachel. Brooke, meanwhile, struggles with Clothes Over Bro’s demands and with Julian’s work alongside actress Alex, before she and Julian begin repairing their relationship.
Haley’s sisters, Quinn and Taylor, return to Tree Hill as Quinn separates from her husband David and starts a relationship with Clay. The James family’s focus shifts when their mother, Lydia, tells Haley and Quinn that she has pancreatic cancer and will not pursue more treatment. They try to change her mind, but the second opinion offers no cure. Lydia spends a last Christmas with the family before she dies, leaving Haley depressed and struggling to care for Jamie and her work. Nathan and Quinn support her as she begins facing the loss.
At the end of the season, Julian’s film premieres in Utah, where he proposes to Brooke and she accepts. Haley takes a small sign from her mother as permission to move forward and tells Nathan she is pregnant. Clay and Quinn return home, apparently safe after the celebration, when Katie Ryan arrives and shoots them both. The season ends on the shooting; their survival is left for the next season.
