Steve and Connie Murphy arrive in Colombia, where even clearing their cat through immigration gives the traffickers access to Steve's passport. Javier Peña introduces his new partner to police work conducted through informants and uneasy alliances. Connie begins looking for nursing work in a poor neighbourhood, while Steve discovers how quickly his official identity can reach people who want him dead.
The M-19 guerrillas kidnap Marta Ochoa, expecting her wealthy family to pay a ransom. Pablo brings the traffickers together around an armed response called Death to Kidnappers. Their meeting also offers Peña an intelligence opportunity. His informant Helena enters the gathering, but Gacha's men detain and assault her. Peña and Carrillo rescue her after extracting information from a captured sicario, leaving Murphy behind during the operation.
Murphy insists that partnership must mean being included when the work becomes dangerous. Pablo's campaign against the guerrillas forces Marta's release, but his men continue killing. M-19 leader Iván brings him the stolen sword of Simón Bolívar as an offering. Pablo accepts it and proposes cooperation instead of killing him. The traffickers now have an organised force, while the Murphys return home to an open door and discover that their private life is already exposed.
