Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Haley's reunion with Dylan complicates her relationship with Arvin, and she eventually chooses her former boyfriend. Their future changes again when an accident during a date leads to the discovery that she is pregnant. A promotion at work makes the news harder to process: she fears losing the job she wanted just as she is beginning to progress. Telling the family takes several attempts, and Phil and Claire worry about whether the couple can manage independently. A later appointment reveals that they are expecting twins, making their preparations for parenthood more daunting.
The family also loses DeDe, Jay's former wife and Claire and Mitchell's mother, who dies while travelling with her women's group. Her husband Jerry arrives with possessions she has left behind, bringing reminders of their complicated relationships. Phil begins teaching real estate at Luke's college, initially against his son's wishes. Jay steps back from the closet company and pursues a dog-bed business, while Alex approaches graduation with anxiety about what comes after academic success. Haley and Dylan decide they want to marry before the babies arrive, and hold a small ceremony with close relatives.
The finale revisits the family's birthdays across the preceding year, including Phil's resolution to learn the piano. His recital becomes the setting for another family emergency when Haley goes into labour and everyone heads to the hospital. She gives birth to a boy and a girl. Mitchell and Cameron introduce the babies to the assembled relatives with music from The Lion King, echoing their theatrical introduction of Lily at the beginning of the series. Phil and Claire now find themselves welcoming grandchildren.
