Shannon and Sayid grow closer, but her sightings of Walt interrupt their time together. Sayid initially treats the appearance as a dream, while Shannon insists on finding the boy. She uses Walt's clothes to give Vincent a scent, and the dog leads her to Boone's grave. Sayid follows her and promises that he loves her and will not abandon her. Elsewhere, the tail-section survivors continue toward the main camp with Michael and Jin. Sawyer's wound becomes infected and he collapses, forcing the others to make a stretcher. They struggle to carry him through difficult terrain, and Cindy disappears from the group shortly before they hear whispers in the jungle.
Flashbacks show Shannon teaching ballet and planning for a dance internship in New York. Her father dies after a car accident, and her stepmother refuses to provide money for Shannon's plans. Boone tries unsuccessfully to intervene with his mother. When he offers his own money but cannot offer the future Shannon wants, she angrily rejects his help. On the island, Shannon again hears whispers and sees Walt, this time with Sayid beside her. Walt gestures for silence, but Shannon runs toward him and Sayid follows. A gunshot stops the pursuit. Shannon staggers back with a wound to her torso and collapses into Sayid's arms. Ana Lucia stands nearby holding the smoking gun.
