Flashbacks revisit Michael's time away from camp, beginning with his capture while searching for Walt. The Others take him to their settlement, where Ms. Klugh questions him about his son. Michael demands to see Walt and receives a brief reunion. Walt says he is being tested and warns that his captors are not what they seem. Klugh offers freedom for both of them if Michael releases the prisoner and brings Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley to her.

In the present, Michael insists that only those four survivors accompany him to rescue Walt, concealing the bargain that explains his choices. He objects when Sawyer invites Sayid. Sayid recognises that something is wrong and privately tells Jack that Michael may have been compromised, proposing they respond without immediately exposing their suspicions. Charlie gives Claire recovered medical supplies, then finds Sawyer's heroin-filled statues through Vincent. He throws the statues into the sea while Locke watches from nearby.

The survivors gather for Ana Lucia and Libby's funeral, with Michael standing among people who still blame the escaped captive for the shootings. Hurley speaks about Libby, then agrees to join the expedition Michael has been trying to arrange. Locke removes his leg splints and begins walking without crutches. Before the gathering can end, Sun spots a boat approaching offshore. The approaching vessel interrupts the mourning before anyone on the beach can identify who is aboard.
