Flashbacks show Eko investigating a reported miracle in Australia before his departure for Los Angeles. A girl named Charlotte reportedly revived after drowning, but her father, Richard Malkin, offers an ordinary explanation and calls himself a fraudulent psychic. Eko closes the investigation. Charlotte later confronts him at the airport and says she met his dead brother Yemi, who is proud of him. Eko reacts angrily to the message, unable to settle what he should believe about her account.
After the shootings, Michael lets the others believe the prisoner attacked him and escaped. Libby is still alive, and Jack tries to keep her comfortable. Eko has a dream directing him to help Locke find the question mark. Their search leads back to the crashed drug plane and a station beneath it. Inside the Pearl, they find monitors, notebooks and an orientation film describing observation of people who believe their assigned tasks are important.
Locke interprets the film as evidence that entering the Swan's numbers is a meaningless experiment. Eko reaches the opposite conclusion and commits himself to continuing the task. Neither interpretation establishes what the button actually does. Back at the Swan, Hurley speaks to the dying Libby and apologises for forgetting the blankets. She manages to say Michael's name, but Jack takes it as concern for his safety. Libby dies before she can explain who shot her.
