The Royal We

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Lightman joins a beauty-pageant assignment after becoming suspicious of Gillian's new recruit and her attempts to keep him writing his book. At rehearsals, he focuses on teenage contestant Megan Cross and the closeness of her relationship with her mother Laura. A bruise leads Megan to accuse another contestant's father, Fletcher, of assault. The accusation spreads to other girls, and angry parents gather around his vehicle while his daughter is taken into protective care.

Fletcher says Megan attacked him with scissors, and the inquiry exposes his affair with Laura. Identical accounts from the other girls suggest their allegations came from a shared script. Lightman confronts Megan at a staged hospital visit, where she threatens him and exposes self-inflicted injuries. A diary provides the explanation: Megan has been using Laura's account of abuse to torment her mother. Cal then finds her on a ledge and talks her away from suicide.

Megan competes once more, takes second place and tells Laura there will be no more pageants. Lightman returns the diary rather than leave its history inside the public accusations. Loker meanwhile applies for work at the Pentagon, frustrated with Cal's treatment of him. At home, Cal discusses his mother's death with Emily after using it during the intervention. Emily writes a foreword for his book, and Cal finally begins with an admission of how little he understands the people closest to him.
