With the consultancy's money frozen and a publisher demanding his unfinished book, Lightman notices a man preparing to rob his bank. He follows Mike Salinger and talks his way into the planned crime, offering access to the vault. Salinger's anger comes from a mortgage dispute that cost him his home and sent him to prison after he attacked a bank employee. His accomplice Henry Miller presents a more immediate threat of violence.
Lightman works with Detective Sharon Wallowski after ending the consultancy's FBI retainer. He arranges police positions inside the bank and signals Wallowski as the robbers arrive. Once the gang enters the vault, officers surround them. Salinger takes a woman hostage, but Cal identifies manager Sandy Baxter as the person responsible for the original mortgage mistake and knocks Salinger's gun aside. Baxter admits that fear kept him from correcting the error and apologises to Salinger's former wife.
The arrests do not settle Cal's argument with Gillian about control of their business. She froze the assets to pressure him over his book, and he threatens to end their partnership if she does it again. Loker considers leaving, while Gillian brings in new candidates. Cal hires hearing-impaired Sarah after seeing how closely she reads him, then introduces Wallowski as their new help. The financial dispute remains personal even after the robbery is stopped.
