Gillian's former patient Claire asks the Lightman Group for help after fearing that business partner Zach will force her out of their social-network company. Zach has already removed co-founder Kyle, and Cal distrusts his assurances that Claire is safe. Before the team can resolve the dispute, Gillian finds Claire stabbed and cannot save her. Records from the Seekout application appear to place Kyle at the apartment, making him the obvious suspect.
Kyle says Zach can manipulate the technology and agrees to trace what happened through his phone. He also admits that he and Claire were lovers and planned to remove Zach from the company. A destructive program erases the electronic trail just as Kyle finds it. Wallowski then encourages Zach to produce evidence of the relationship, sending him back to the private messages he secretly obtained. Cal, Gillian and Kyle catch him accessing material that exposes his knowledge and jealousy.
Cal provokes Zach into boasting that his money and lawyers make the truth irrelevant, records the exchange and has it broadcast through the network. Zach ends in custody. Cal also gives a young man, Key, work investigating Emily's boyfriend, only to hear that the boy has done nothing wrong and deserves trust. At home, Emily asks whether Cal loves Gillian romantically. He says yes, but cannot explain why he has never acted on the feeling.
