A baby's disappearance brings Lightman and Gillian into the Bradley household. Colette says a man and woman forced her from her car and took Kimberly, while her husband Lane, a police sergeant, directs his anger towards her. The investigators find that her account conceals an affair and questions about the fertility treatment the couple received. Those secrets attract suspicion, but neither an unhappy marriage nor uncertain paternity establishes who took the child.
Questioning Dr Heaton reveals that he knows more about Kimberly's conception than he will say. Colette eventually identifies her employer Ben Aston as the biological father, although he does not know it. Lane's purchase of nappies also looks suspicious until Cal understands it as an attempt to keep hoping Kimberly will return. Attention turns towards the family's older son, LJ, whose reactions suggest satisfaction at seeing his father suffer.
LJ admits taking Kimberly and leaving her with a friend. He resents the attention Lane gives the baby and used spare car keys from the house, showing that the act was planned. Kimberly is found safe and reunited with her parents. Lane wants the matter kept inside the family, but Wallowski explains that he cannot decide whether the kidnapping is prosecuted. LJ is taken away, leaving the father with a recovered daughter and another child he must learn to understand.
