Two sisters' suicides draw Lightman into an investigation of young Indian women living in Washington. Their work at a strip club offers one possible explanation for their distress, but another death and evidence that the women recently gave birth lead elsewhere. They had been recruited into a cheap surrogacy operation, charged expenses against their promised payment and abandoned after delivering the babies. Immigration official Personick helped organise the scheme.
Lightman learns that one woman called Personick shortly before her death. He brings in a man posing as her father, who makes a false claim about that conversation. Personick contradicts him and admits receiving the call but doing nothing. He is charged with murder within the episode's account of the investigation. The inquiry also sends Lightman back to a film of a woman concealing her misery. He eventually tells Emily that the woman was her grandmother.
Gillian and Loker question financier Joseph Hollin over a Ponzi scheme. He offers to return investors' money if his daughter Carolyn avoids prosecution, but Loker secretly passes information to the authorities because he wants accountability. Carolyn is charged, and Hollin withdraws the offer, destroying Gillian's recovery deal. Loker denies interfering and tells Torres that he used a sedative to conceal his reaction. She warns him that Lightman will discover the lie, while Gillian is left with investors who still need their money.
