Ormund's army occupies Tumbleton, forcing townspeople to house soldiers and making civilians part of his defence against Rhaenyra. The real Daeron attends him while the prince's dragon Tessarion remains nearby. Rhaenyra considers how to answer without burning subjects who supported her. Orwyle recommends sending ground troops, Mysaria presses her to appoint a Master of Coin, and Torrhen Manderly receives the office. Alicent supplies what she remembers about Ormund, including his extreme sensitivity to smells.
Aegon and Larys reach Sunfyre at Rook's Rest. Aegon insists that his dragon is alive, but they must leave before the people charging visitors to see the body expose them. Their search for shelter reduces the former king to unpleasant labour and humiliation. At Harrenhal, Alys sends Criston and Gwayne away without revealing Aemond's presence. Criston decides to stop the Riverlands army rather than give up the campaign now that the capital has fallen.
Daemon secures gold from Jeyne Arryn and finds Rhaena hiding with Sheepstealer. She begs him to keep her presence secret, unable to face Rhaenyra after Jace's death. Daemon protects her by presenting a shepherd's head as that of the missing rider. In Tumbleton, Ormund orders Daeron to kill the brother of a woman attacked by one of his soldiers. Daeron obeys, while back in King's Landing Alicent discovers that the captive Helaena is pregnant.
