Season 5

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Season five begins with Lorelai and Luke finally starting a relationship, while Rory faces the consequences of sleeping with her married former boyfriend, Dean. Dean’s marriage to Lindsay ends, but a brief attempt to date Rory again collapses, and she turns toward Logan Huntzberger, a Yale classmate whose wealthy family expects him to follow its rules. Lorelai’s parents are also living separately, and their Friday dinners keep the family tied together even as Emily questions Lorelai’s choices.

Rory and Logan first agree to keep things casual, then commit to each other after she decides that an arrangement without expectations is not for her. His family makes plain that they do not see Rory as a suitable match, but the sharper blow comes from Logan’s father, Mitchum, who gives Rory a newspaper internship and then tells her she lacks the instincts of a journalist. Shaken by that judgment, she joins Logan in stealing a yacht, and the two are arrested.

The theft leaves Rory facing charges and exposes a deeper disagreement with Lorelai: Rory says she will leave Yale, while Lorelai refuses to let her return home without a plan. Richard and Emily take Rory in and arrange for her to live in their pool house, leaving the mother and daughter estranged. Elsewhere, Lorelai weighs selling the Dragonfly Inn, and Luke backs away from the house he hoped to share with her. The season closes with Lorelai asking Luke to marry her.
