A flashback shows Lester acquiring the shotgun during a bargain over socks, then revisits the shooting that left a pellet in his hand when Malvo killed Vern. In the present, Lester is trapped in a cell with Wrench and Numbers. Their pressure finally makes him give up Malvo's name. His infected hand becomes a medical emergency, and he is taken to hospital. Molly rides with him and questions him while he drifts through pain and confusion. He insists that he never paid anyone to kill anybody. That denial stops short of explaining his relationship with Malvo or the murders.
Molly has also established that Hess broke Lester's nose shortly before his death and that Lester called Malvo's motel around the time Pearl was killed. Bill finally begins listening to her connections. Molly searches the Nygaard house and examines the washing machine, but does not recover the murder weapon. Malvo keeps Stavros frightened enough to agree to pay and locks Don in the pantry so he cannot interfere. After spotting Gus nearby, Malvo follows him home. Gus's neighbor confronts the stranger sitting outside and recognizes him as trouble. Malvo threatens the neighbor before leaving, while Molly visits the hospitalized Lester again.
