Five years after high school, Rue works for Laurie to repay the debt from the lost suitcase of drugs. Their kindness stays with Rue when she later discusses faith with Ali and begins listening to the Bible.
Cassie and Nate are engaged and living together while he tries to sustain his father's property business. She wants an extravagant wedding and considers selling adult content online to fund it, provoking arguments about money and how she presents herself. Lexi works as an assistant for television producer Patty Lance and contributes ideas on set. Maddy manages talent while receiving only a small share of the income her work generates.
Laurie sends Rue to deliver drugs to Alamo, a wealthy strip-club owner whose party initially looks like an escape from her current employers. Rue likes his attention and seeks an opportunity to work for him. When Tish dies after taking the drugs Rue delivered, that apparent welcome becomes a threat. Rue insists that she did not knowingly bring contaminated drugs and invokes her new interest in faith. Alamo tests her claim by shooting an apple from her head, leaving her alive but subject to another dangerous man's judgment.
