Rue recovers in hospital from a kidney infection and receives a visit from Jules, who apologizes for withholding the truth about Nate. At the winter formal, their reunion becomes strained by Jules's continued contact with Anna. Rue confronts Nate about harming her friends, but he answers by suggesting that Jules will eventually leave her behind. The remark feeds a fear already growing between the two girls.
Elsewhere, Maddy and Nate try to provoke each other before acknowledging that their abusive relationship should end. Maddy has taken a disc from Nate's room and watched its disturbing contents. Kat apologizes to Ethan for misreading the carnival encounter, and he admits that he has liked her since they first sat together in class. Cassie undergoes an abortion with support from her mother and Lexi, while Fezco robs a doctor to settle his debt to his supplier.
Rue proposes that she and Jules leave town together, and they reach the train station after packing their bags. At the platform, Rue becomes overwhelmed by the thought of abandoning her family and cannot board. Jules leaves alone while Rue walks home in distress, remembering her father's death and the pain her addiction has caused. She uses drugs again in her bedroom. The closing musical sequence follows that relapse, leaving the separation and Rue's return to substance use as the evening's outcome.
