Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Season 11 opens on the aftermath of a car forced off a bridge into the Chicago River. Pratt and Chen escape with serious injuries, while Elgin is trapped; rescuers pull him onto a boat, but he dies from his injuries. Abby begins her medical internship, Ray arrives as a new doctor, and Neela returns to Chicago after abandoning her placement in Michigan. Carter is still mourning his and Kem’s infant son, and scattering the child’s ashes does not mend their relationship.
Carter and Kem try to find a way forward, but she leaves for Africa and his relationship with Wendall cannot settle his feelings. Carter later visits Kem in Paris, where her mother is ill, and offers to return to Africa with her. Meanwhile, Abby has to earn trust as a physician, Pratt’s impulsiveness strains his work with colleagues, Neela struggles to find her place as an emergency physician, and Ray’s confidence and musical ambitions sometimes put him at odds with his mentors.
Carter eventually decides to leave County and join Kem in Africa. His farewell gathering is interrupted when a major disaster sends casualties into a short-staffed emergency department. Ray and the interns take charge until Luka reaches the hospital. Carter leaves the workplace that shaped his career, while Pratt makes a tentative effort to reconnect with his estranged father, Charlie. The season thus gives Carter a clear departure from County even as the hospital’s surviving staff must manage the flood of patients without him.
