Shi-jin's rescue assignment and Mo-yeon's long hours in surgery keep them apart before they can properly begin dating. When he returns, he catches her after an exhausting shift and takes her home. Their awkward meal becomes a chance to admit that they have thought about each other. The cinema date that follows ends abruptly when another military call requires him to leave before the film starts. Mo-yeon also faces disappointment at work when a less capable colleague with influential connections receives the promotion she wanted. A television appearance opens a different route to success, but does not settle her questions about Shi-jin.
They meet to discuss his secretive work and the possibility that he kills people. Her commitment to saving lives clashes with the force his duties can require, and they agree to part. Months later, Shi-jin serves in Uruk with Dae-young and Ki-bum, the former thief who has joined the army. Mo-yeon has become a familiar face on television and advanced at the hospital. After rejecting the director's sexual advance, she is assigned to lead a medical team overseas. She arrives in Uruk expecting a difficult posting, only to find Shi-jin among the soldiers sent to receive the doctors.
