Jonas returns to 20 June 2019, before Michael's suicide and before Mikkel disappears. At the lake, he approaches Martha after his younger self leaves, kisses her and tells her that they belong together. Martha later takes those words back to the Jonas who has never said them. That evening, the Nielsens hold their anniversary party, while Hannah and Ulrich begin their affair and Michael remains at home, distressed after seeing the child he once was.
The visiting Jonas goes home to confront his father. Michael recognizes that something has changed, and Jonas reveals that he knows he was born Mikkel Nielsen. Jonas begs him not to take his own life and shows him the farewell letter. Michael is bewildered: he has not decided to die or written the note. The effort to prevent his suicide introduces the idea and the words that Jonas had believed were already inevitable.
Michael also remembers how he disappeared. A version of Jonas led him through the cave passage in November and left him in 1986, an act the visiting Jonas has not yet performed. Elderly Claudia arrives and tells Jonas that Adam sent him to bring about these events rather than stop them. She insists that Jonas must live and oppose Adam. Jonas says goodbye to Michael and leaves with Claudia, while his father sits down to write the letter.
