Mikkel searches for his family in Winden in 1986. The house he remembers now belongs to his grandparents, and his parents are teenagers who do not recognize him. At the police station, Egon Tiedemann assumes Mikkel's claim to be Ulrich's son is a prank. He arranges medical attention rather than accepting the boy's explanation. Nurse Ines Kahnwald collects Mikkel and offers him the kindness he has failed to find elsewhere.
Claudia Tiedemann begins work as director of the nuclear power plant and questions figures that differ from its published records. Bernd Doppler urges her to protect the plant's reputation, then directs her toward concealed radioactive barrels in the caves. Helge gives Claudia a copy of H. G. Tannhaus's book about time. Elsewhere, young Charlotte studies a dead bird, and Egon investigates a flock of sheep whose deaths involve ruptured eardrums.
At the hospital, Mikkel tells Ines that he comes from the future, but she takes the claim as an imaginative story. He slips away when the lights begin flickering and returns to the caves with Egon's lighter. In 2019, Ulrich tries to force the locked door open. Father and son can hear each other from different years, yet neither can reach the other. Mikkel injures his leg, and the attempt leaves them unable to reach one another, thirty-three years apart.
