Karen's life before New York is shown through her work at the family diner and relationship with drug dealer Todd. Her mother's death has left the family struggling, and she argues that the business depends on her despite its worsening finances. Kevin tries to give his sister a way out by restoring her place at college. A dinner intended to celebrate the news becomes a bitter argument, and Karen leaves with Todd rather than accept the future her brother wants for her.
Kevin sets fire to Todd's trailer, prompting Todd to beat him. Karen shoots Todd to stop the attack and drives away with her injured brother. Impaired and distracted, she crashes the car, killing Kevin. Her father helps prevent the incident from becoming a prosecution, but tells her to leave. The memories return to the guilt she carries in the present as Lantom encourages her to believe that redemption remains possible while she shelters at the church.
Fisk sends Dex there in the Daredevil suit to kill her. Matt abandons his chance to attack Fisk and races to intervene, but Dex attacks the congregation until Karen reveals herself. Lantom steps into the path of a weapon aimed at her and dies. Matt fights Dex while Karen leads the other worshippers out, then helps Matt when the battle reaches the balcony. She knocks Dex away before he can finish the injured man, but their attacker escapes and leaves her tending Matt beside the wreckage.
