Pierrot le Fou

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Spike leaves a pool hall and witnesses the aftermath of a killing by Mad Pierrot, an unusually powerful attacker who will not leave a witness alive. Pierrot turns on him immediately, shrugging off gunfire and moving through the air with a speed Spike cannot match. A passing cat distracts the killer long enough for Spike to escape, badly injured. Jet seeks information about the man while Spike recuperates aboard the Bebop. The search suggests that surviving the first encounter offers little protection: Pierrot has a record of returning for anyone who sees him work.

An invitation to Space Land draws Spike into another fight despite Faye's attempt to keep it from him. The abandoned amusement park supplies an elaborate hunting ground, with mechanical animals and rides surrounding a battle Spike still cannot win by shooting. Jet and Ed uncover Pierrot's past as Tongpu, the subject of experiments intended to produce an exceptional killer. The procedures gave him his abilities while damaging his mind, and his terror of cats dates from his confinement. Faye flies in to help but is quickly forced out of the fight. Spike finally wounds Pierrot with a throwing knife, provoking a child's panic at the pain. Pierrot stops defending himself and is crushed by a marching attraction. Jet's explanation reaches Spike after the immediate danger has already ended.
