Faye tells Ein about waking from cryogenic suspension three years earlier without any memory of her previous life. The clinic immediately presented her with an enormous bill, leaving her dependent on people who seemed to understand a world she did not recognise. A lawyer named Whitney Matsumoto offered help and affection, and Faye began to trust him. During an apparent attack by debt collectors, he seemed to sacrifice himself to protect her. His supposed death left her with his estate, which turned out to mean more debts. The story gives Spike, listening nearby, an explanation for some of the mistrust she now brings to other people.
Jet then returns with a minor bounty who is the same Whitney, alive and greatly changed in appearance. His presence exposes the romance and sacrifice as a confidence trick. Faye takes him away in her own ship, making Spike think she is abandoning the crew for him, but she wants information about her missing past. The doctor involved in her revival joins the confrontation, revealing how the apparent rescue was arranged. Neither man can restore the identity she lost before waking; Whitney's intimate knowledge of her vulnerability was never the same thing as knowledge of her earlier life. Faye turns him over to the authorities for a disappointing reward. Spike meets her afterward, leaving her with company in the present despite the unanswered questions behind her.
