Season 4

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Greendale's fourth year is supposed to be the group's last stretch before graduation, but Jeff keeps looking for a way to avoid what comes next. At Thanksgiving, he meets his estranged father for the first time while the rest of the group attends Shirley's in-laws' dinner. Jeff initially gets along with William, then leaves angry when his father claims that abandoning him helped him grow; he returns to confront him and tells him the abandonment left lasting damage. Meanwhile, Troy and Britta's relationship shifts the group's dynamics. In Basic Human Anatomy, Troy and Abed stage a Freaky Friday body-swap performance to give Troy a way to face his doubts about dating Britta; the act ends, and Troy breaks up with her himself.

The finale turns Jeff's fear of graduation into an imagined battle with a darker version of himself. Abed helps him recognize that Greendale has changed him, and the nightmare scenario is not an actual alternate timeline. Jeff completes his studies and graduates with his friends present; Pierce follows him across the stage. The ceremony closes Jeff's student chapter, though he remains unsure what life outside Greendale should look like. Across the year, Annie and Shirley compete for the top class ranking, Pierce surprises the group by finishing their history banners, and the Dean's attachment to Jeff becomes harder to separate from his own ideas about the school. The group leaves the ceremony together, but its members are not all at the same point in their education or plans.
