Hank survives the operation, but his recovery will require expensive physical therapy that insurance may not fully cover. Marie struggles with the prospect of paying for the care he needs. Skyler proposes using Walt's money and supplies an explanation she can give her sister: Walt has supposedly been winning large sums at blackjack. She presents gambling as both the source of the money and a cause of their marital difficulties. Walt is surprised by how quickly she assembles the story, but Skyler makes clear that she suspects his business has helped put Hank in hospital.

At the laboratory, Jesse calculates how much Gus stands to earn compared with the wages he and Walt receive. Walt considers their arrangement acceptable; Jesse resents doing the manufacturing while someone else takes most of the proceeds. Saul's proposal that Jesse buy a nail salon to disguise his income also meets resistance. Jesse instead recruits Badger and Skinny Pete to help sell meth skimmed from the lab, approaching recovering users at his support group. Walt separately meets Gus and explains his deduction that the attack on Hank served Gus's interests by bringing pressure down on the cartel. Gus offers to extend their contract. Walt considers the money and security while remaining entangled with the employer whose decisions have endangered his family.
