Walter and Skyler attend a birthday party for Elliott Schwartz, a former scientific colleague whose company has become enormously successful. Elliott offers Walt a job with health insurance, but Walt recognises that Skyler has told him about the cancer. He rejects the offer, treating assistance from an old colleague as charity rather than a practical way to obtain treatment. Jesse also attempts a change of direction by looking for legitimate employment. When that fails, he recruits Badger to help make meth in the RV. Jesse finds their meth inferior to Walt's product and repeatedly throws it away, provoking a fight that ends with Badger stranded in the desert.
Skyler gathers the family to persuade Walt to undergo chemotherapy. The discussion exposes different views of what support should mean: Walter Jr. is angry that his father might refuse treatment, while Marie argues that the decision belongs to Walt. Hank eventually recognises that point too. Walt explains his fear of spending the time he has left too ill to enjoy being alive. The following morning he agrees to treatment, allowing Skyler to believe Elliott's financial help will be accepted. When Gretchen Schwartz calls to offer the money directly, however, Walt says that insurance will cover the expense. He then visits Jesse and asks to cook again. A legitimate source of support remains available, but Walt chooses to keep his family unaware of how he intends to pay.
