Walter tells the wider family that he has lung cancer, bringing Hank, Marie and Walter Jr. into a secret Skyler already knows. Skyler arranges a specialist consultation, but the likely treatment cost adds another argument to a household already under pressure. Walt claims he can draw on his pension while privately using drug money. Hank, meanwhile, is investigating the disappearance of Emilio and Krazy-8 and the unusually pure meth recovered from their operation. He has evidence that someone new is manufacturing in Albuquerque without knowing that the person is his own brother-in-law. Walt refuses Jesse's suggestion that they resume their partnership, even as the financial problem remains unresolved.
Jesse returns to his parents' home after becoming frightened while using meth with friends. His younger brother Jake appears to be the successful child Jesse is constantly measured against, but the brothers briefly find some understanding. When their parents discover a marijuana joint, they assume Jesse brought it and make him leave. Jake subsequently admits that it was his, revealing that Jesse accepted the blame to protect him. Walt's frustration takes a different form. After earlier encountering an obnoxious businessman named Ken, he sees him again at a petrol station. Walt damages the man's car, causing it to catch fire, and walks away. His family is trying to organise care while he is acting on anger they do not see.
